KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

So cliché, but so true.

Trying to start a business is tough, and being a Veteran doesn't make it any easier despite all the Veteran's preferences that are supposed to be afforded to you. When supposed small business assistance entities don't really care if you have Veteran benefits or not, or whether they understand its full potential, you slowly realize you have a rough ride ahead.

After reading about President Bush's signing of the Veterans Benefit Act and one year of planning, I finally started my own company and quickly ran into problems trying to use my Veterans preference. The main problem, Government Contractors don't seem to care. Whether because they feel resentful that the Government mandates them to give business to Veteran companies or just plain complacency, their lack of motivation will slow you down. Federal Agencies have their own slew of problems. While they show greater motivation, they fall short because of the massive bureaucracy. A new Veteran company will often find itself being disqualified because it lacks the all important 'Customer Contacts' and 'Past Projects'.

So, which comes first? The chicken or the egg? How do you get a contract with no 'Past Projects' and how do you get 'Past Projects' with no contract?
